NEA Big Read: True Grit
Tuesday, March 5th at Pennington Quilt Works
Pennington Quilt Works is thrilled to be partnering with Pennington Public Library during the month of March 2019 as part of the Small Town… NEA Big Read Program. The library has selected True Grit by Charles Portis for their month’s long programming which includes book discussion groups, movie screenings and community events. Pennington Quilt Works will be offering a day of events that will educate you about textiles of the late 1800’s and engage you in a hands-on sewing class.
11:00-12:00 Antique Quilts Trunk Show
Presented by Dana Balsamo, owner of Material Pleasures, LLC. Dana is an American Quilter’s Society (AQS) Certified Quilt Appraiser and has been in the vintage quilt business since 1999. She will share her vast knowledge of vintage textiles as well as multiple examples of quilts from the late 1800s.
Guest Instructor: Dana Balsamo
1:30-4:30 Introduction to Hand Piecing
Presented by Arlene Stilson, manager of Pennington Quilt Works and Marisa Simon, quilting educator. Though sewing machines were available in the late 1800s, most quilters pieced their quilts by hand. Arlene and Marisa will teach you the basics in this hands-on workshop. Hand piecing is an enjoyable and portable way to make a quilt top and is currently making a comeback as part of the “slow stitching” movement.
Instructors: Arlene and Marisa
Fee $30, includes fabric, templates, thread and a hand sewing needle.
Spend the day with PQW!
Join us for the lecture, a catered lunch including discussion of quilt history, and the hand sewing class.
